Chicoma Mountain, at over 11,500 ft, is Rio Arriba Counties highest peak. We admire it every morning, noon and evening ..and have sworn to climb it for years! Yesterday my neighbor Sal (
Rt66 Alien) and I climbed it.

<< Chicoma is the peak on the left
As you look at it from our porch, it’s 17.5 miles ..but the drive to the trailhead and back ended up 88 miles. It’s easy! On Paseo Juan Onate (84/285) headed North, look for the sign to State Police and Magistrates Court just after the KFC and make left (right if coming Sourth on 84/285). This is also a Forest Road 144. After a spectacular ascent, approx 27 miles up and into a non descript left turn (for high clearance) you can get closer than the 3 miles to the summit that we hiked. We also decided to hike towards Chicoma’s sister peak, Pulvadera (peak on right in pic above)..only a few miles distant and nearly the same elevation.

<<Back Side Cerro Pedernal
Our hike ended up 10 miles total. I brought no maps or GPS, a rarity for me! Sal brought his cam. As with most hikes near us, here at NMO, we saw nobody after the trailhead!..BUT…many had summit this peak ..over the centuries ..as you see (10ft cairn behind us). Dan
