Emerald first came to New Mexico in the early 80's and again in the early 90's. Something in the landscape spoke deeply to her and affected her art. She has spent much time in the desert southwest, including California. Emerald says that her work as a wilderness guide and her art come from this relationship with the land: It is personal, mythical, and collective. Emerald paints, does ceramics and writes poetry. Her love for the land and nature shows in all of her works and her approach to art is unique, intense and very expressive.

Poets heart Somewhere, beneath the soft curves of soul, Under the brittle broken branches, Are eyes that feel what they see. They have known the suffering and the rising. They have birthed the great compassion and the great lonliness. They have danced in raging wind, whipping the sword of the great jealousy. Even God has been there. It is from here that the poet breathes his words into my mouth. It is from here that the embrace exists. The poet is the witness that never waivers, The heart friend that burns with soothing fire.
