International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe
July 9 -11,
2010
It was a journey around the world in one
day when I first visited the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market. The
experience was truly amazing. People from exotic countries like Bhutan,
Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Burkina Faso, Swaziland, Niger, Mozambique, Mali,
Indonesia, Nepal, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil and many more showed their art which is
deeply rooted in the traditions and culture of their country. Folk Art is not
only decorative but also utilitarian. Skills and techniques are taught and
learned from generation to generation. Talking to the artists is enriching and
fun. They love to share where they come from and to show their art. Sometimes
they don’t speak English but their bright smiles let you easily overcome any
communications barriers. Walking through the market is a feast for the senses,
an explosion of colors, sounds, and scents in a spectacular setting on Museum
Hill just a little outside of Santa Fe with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in
the back. Last but not least: Do NOT forget to stop at the food corner, savor
one or several of the many traditional dishes and let it all sink in. I know
for sure that I’ll visit the Folk Art Market again this year. Gabriela
