Georgia O Keeffe Country

Although nearly 7 years ago, we began our re-invention just off the Plaza in Santa Fe at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, I must tell you that when in Santa Fe, you are NOT in Georgia O'Keeffe Country.

I personally polled 100 people coming out of the museum, and a full 85% of them thought they were standing in Georgia O'Keeffe Country! Since my research for this page turned up no ..umm..accepted definition of what/where Georgia O'Keeffe Country is, let me take you back to that time nearly 7 years ago.

What we loved most about her work was her varying work on Cerro Pedernal, New Mexico's famous flat topped mountain in the Jemez Mountains (pronounced hay-mus in Spanish). So we asked how to get there and was informed to go to Abiquiu. Well, after now, many years of research & study, the rest is history ..except to say still..what IS Georgia O'Keeffe Country?

For simplicities sake let's call Georgia O'Keeffe Country what would be a clear field of vision to her beloved mountain ..where 1/2 of her ashes were scattered upon her death. This would include from Hernandez (since her buddy Ansel Adams shot Moon Over Hernandez) ..toward Santa Fe.

The best way to get to know Georgia O'Keeffe Country is to come and stay a week! Explore with a car (4 wheel drive best), horse, kayak or just a backpack! Here's some links to lots of Georgia O'Keeffe Country things to do:

Abiquiu- Georgia O'Keeffe lived right in the Village of Abiquiu the remaining decades of her life. Vehicle or Walking Tour with Author Napoleon Garcia. The Georgia O'Keeffe Home & Studio is located here.

Abiquiu Lake- Although for most or all of her life, Abiquiu Lake was only a plan on the Army Corps ..um..plans ..it's dead center Piedre Lumbre and from this vantage..you can see many subjects of her most famous works. Kayak-Car

Abiquiu Outing- Drive thru amazing landscapes that origionally ..the artist drove thru in a Model A Ford.

Art Tours- Many artists flock here to "drink from the waters"..and we have 3 Art Tours near the shadow of her beloved Mountain, Cerro Pedernal. You'll see many Georgia O'Keeffe style skulls, poppies, flowers, Pedernals and pictures. Car or backpack

Cerro Pedernal- "Flint Mountain"..painted in many of her famous and popular works overlooks Georgia O'Keeffe Country and indeed ashes of her were scattered on this mountain. Vehicle (best 4wd), Backpack, Trail Ride

Christ in the Desert Monastery- She spent lots of time at the monastery, in it's beginnings and designed and helped decorate what has become an incredible and awe inspiring spot in the Rio Chama Wilderness. Car-Kayak

Continental Divide Trail- Survey much of Georgia O'Keeffe Country from as much as 10,500 ft of elevation, between the Villages of Cuba ..and 75 miles North to Canjilon. Backpack or Trail Ride

Copper Canyon- Just outside the Village of Abiquiu, this a 10 mile long box canyon full of astounding formations of red, yellow ..made awesome thru banding (water and wind and a million years). Backpack or Trail Ride

Echo Amphitheater- This is an easy Walk and is about 12 miles North of the Village of Abiquiu on Rt84.

Ghost Ranch- 20,000 acres of amazing Hiking, Trail Riding and subject for painters ..and with an amazing history. When Georgia O'Keeffe relocated here in North Central, NM, she bought a small house on the property.

The White Place- Plaza Blanca in spanish, was the subject of an O'Keeffe series, and she also loved just spending time here. Backpacking
