Although here in North Central New Mexico, we have a few different types of Hummingbirds, the ones starring in this battle scene ..seem to be Ruby Throats and Allens Hummingbirds. Both males and females, there's one Allens Hummingbird that is a most pugnacious and dominating bird. It protects the feeder for both itself and a couple of females.
When we first developed here, we camped out for a couple of weeks in Summer. I wore an Aussie Bush hat that was brightly colored and in the evening I was getting freeked..because I'd hear a pronounced hum..just behind me, turn quickly and see nothing! The mystery was finally solved when Gabriela saw one hovering aound my head mistaking my hat for a meal!
Just next to where we were camping, there's a male Juniper Tree. I could have sworn I was hear the
Taos Hum, because soon afterward ..and just after dusk ..every night an almost tremendous hummmm ..and sustained!
When I finally discerend it was coming from that Juniper..I finally turned on a flashlight..to cach what I believe was a Hummingbird 'flock' in full mating ritual!
I've always wanted a bunch of feeders on our portal, but the battles make Gabriela nervous that in flight ..and being chased, she'll get stabbed in an eyeball with a prolific beak ..so we're left with one or two sometimes.
Up on the
High Road to Taos, there is the
Sipapu Resort. They have 20 feeders on their portal. In Summer, and within about 400 yards of the place, Hummingbirds are thick in the air on a circular flight path toward the feeders. There are literally hundreds of them. The battles there are ongoing and dangerous!!
