Encaustic Art Institute Workshops Jul-Dec2011

   

“Photo Encaustic Workshop” 
Friday, July 15 - Sunday, July 17, 2011.  $525.  $100 deposit required.
Minimum: 8 students.  Maximum: 15 students. 
The fusion of photographic process with the encaustic medium is the focus of this workshop.  Includes theory and practice.  Participants learn how to integrate photographic images with encaustic through techniques such as layering, pouring, painting, and by making the original imagery translucent.  Students will experiment with various methods of manipulating the original photograph, including toning, distressing, and transfer techniques.  Also covered are archival techniques, presentation methods, and basic safety.
Instructor: Michael David.  BFA Parsons School of Design.  Abstract painter known for his use of encaustic.  Work included in permanent collections of the following museums:  Metropolitan, Guggenheim, Jewish Museum of NY, Museum of Contemporary Art, LA, and the LA County Museum of Art.   Recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Edward Albee Foundations, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  To see more work: http://www.michaeldavidartist.com


“Hot Wax/Cool Art: Introducing Young People to Encaustic”                                     
Friday, July 29, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
Minimum: 8 students.  Maximum: 15 students.  $175.  $50 deposit required
Students of all ages can learn to work safely, productively and inexpensively with encaustic. Painting, printing, sculpting and altering photographs are just some of the ways to use it in classrooms, after school art programs or camps.  This workshop provides ample time for individual creative work and for group brainstorming of various teaching challenges and resource possibilities.
Instructor: Margaret Berry.  BA, MS, artist-in-residence for the Nebraska Arts Council and developer of Hot Wax/Cool Art™ workshops. Has taught encaustic to a wide variety of groups from professional artists to teens in prison to visually impaired children.. “Blazing the Wax Trail:  New Tools, Techniques & Tips”
Saturday, July 30. 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.   $175.  $50 deposit required. 
All materials included.
Do you like to try before you buy?  Test the limits of new products?  See if a new technique or fuser will make a difference in your work? This intensive “expo” setting will give you a hands-on experience with the latest substrates, paints and more. Compare and evaluate with other artists as you experiment with your own work. Plus, win products during the hourly drawings!

“Waxed Paper” 
Friday, August 19 - Sunday, August 21.  9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Minimum: 8 students.  Maximum: 15 students.  $525.  $100 deposit required
Many contemporary artists use paper wrapped over birch panels or paper as a collage element in their work.  This three-day workshop goes one step further by providing participants experience with making their own paper and using the paper as a support for their work.  Students will explore the ways in which paper can be wrapped, glued, stretched, pulp painted and made into sculpture.  Then, using wax glazes, oil sticks and a variety of mixed media techniques, students will transform these amazing supports into works of art.
Instructor: Michelle Belto. BA Education, MA Fine Arts and Consciousness, John F. “Touched with Fire” Beginning Encaustic

Saturday, October 15 - Sunday, October 16, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM  
Minimum: 8 students.  Maximum: 15 students.  $350.  $75 deposit required          
Two-day beginning workshop.  Participants address safety issues, make, pigment and apply wax to panels, experiment with fusing techniques, scraping and layering, learn to embed, incise, dip, pour. Take home several small completed works.
Instructor: Harriette Tsosie. BA, Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, MI. Advanced painting studies with Jules Kirschenbaum. Encaustic workshops with R&F Handmade Paints, Ellen Koment, Paula Roland. Tsosie’s work incorporates archetypes and symbols from various cultures and literature. Exhibited nationally and by the Encaustic Art Institute and Marx Gallery, New Mexico. “Encaustic and Paper Workshop”

Daniella Woolf
The Woman of Wax Works West, Judy Stabile, Wendy Aikin and Daniella Woolf will teach techniques using wax on paper with skill, proficiency, and humor. This class is for beginners as well as seasoned artists.  They will teach all the techniques in their instructive DVD, such as encaustic paint on paper, rusting, bleaching and burning, transfers, resists, and scratching, perforating and sanding. This myriad of techniques will transform and expand your encaustic repertoire. We're talking about mixed media beyond your wildest dreams!  Wendy Aikin, Judy Stabile and Daniella Woolf are partners in Wax Works West, a school for the encaustic arts, outside of Santa Cruz, California. They exhibit nationally and internationally and travel around the world teaching everything encaustic.
Instructors: Daniella Woolf.  M.A. Design, UCLA. Teaches for R and F Paints.  Partner in Wax Works West.  Exhibits globally and nationally.  Represented by Wexler Gallery.  Author of Encaustic with a Textile Sensibility/a gallery between the pages, now a traveling exhibition.  Producer of two teaching DVD’s.  Work focuses on themes of privacy and memory. “Encaustic with a Textile Sensibility”

Minimum: 8 students.  Maximum: 15 students.  $525.  $100 deposit required 
Three-day workshop geared for advanced students, especially with a textile or fiber background. Bring your questions about transferring images, metal leafing, collage, working with line and edge, smooth vs. textured surfaces and mixed-media techniques. Included is a presentation of Encaustic with a Textile Sensibility.
