Challenge begins at NewMexicoOutdoor and heads down our dirt road to the paved road in the Rio Chama Valley (Cty Rd #142).

Making a right on #142 and head West for about 3.5 miles and thru the dry wash ..with the Rio Chama on your left side.
Sierra Negra will be dead ahead.
Make a right at the end of 142 on State Road 554 toward El Rito. There’s a pull-off about 2 ½-3 miles distant on the right side and off in the distance, these buttes, the scenery spectacular:

Soon you’ll see the El Rito water tower off in the distance. At this point, you’re in Carson National Forest.

When in El Rito, bare right staying on Rt 554 for another 10 miles or so, and please be aware of lots of ascents and descents in amazingly beautiful surroundings and around the North side of Cerro Colorado.
When you reach Rt 111, make a right and go approximately 3 miles to Rt 285.
Make a right on Rt 285. In a couple miles..you’ll pass thru the village of Ojo Caliente..renowned for it’s mineral springs at
Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Spa. We highly recommend lunch in their world class restaurant and a Soak…you‘re about half way with the most difficult half behind you!

Continue on Rt 285 for another 15 miles ..much of it with Black Mesa on your left (below). The locals call this Shadow Mountain….and intersect Rt 84.

Make a Right on Rt84.Having past Ojo, Black Mesa up on Left
On the homestretch ..go about 7 miles on Rt 84 til you get to Rt233/Medanales, and make a right.
Go ½ mile to dead end and make a left on CR#142.
Go 2 ½ Miles and make a right on Pedernal Drive to come up to NewMexicoOutdoor and complete the loop by coming all the way..up..up to Hunter and make a Right.
Go .8 Mile to Bluejay and you’re back home….
…..and in time for a cookout and one of those incredible
sunsets over Georgia O’Keeffe’s beloved
Cerro Pedernal!
