In 1598
Juan de Onate's Spanish Colonization expedition arrived here at the Piro Indian Pueblo of Pilabo. They renamed it Socorro (
relief in Spanish) because of the food and shelter provided by the inhabitants. The pueblo and the Spanish Mission were destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt, and the area was not resettled again until 1815. A West Bank road connected Socorro the the Camino Real on the East side of the Rio Grande insuring a constant flow of ..um..'tourism'!
Today, Socorro's flow of tourism is that the town is the embarkation point for the VLA ..or Very Large Array telescope out in the desert ..50 miles from Socorro...and in Fall, the
Bosque del Apache.
Socorro is also the home of NM Tech University ..and Mountain Coffee..where you can get a great lunch and some espresso!
If you're driving 25 and stop in Socorro..don't be stuck to the main exit drag ..be sure to see the Plaza and some historic sites.
