The Grand Circle
The Grand Circle is a major road trip encompassing some 3,000 miles and covering lots of the West's most fascinating places, in the Four Corners (NM-Co-Ut-Az) and Nevada.
You should consider 3 weeks or better ..a month!
Leaving from NewMexicoOutdoor with the intent of being in Durango for overnite, first stop Abiquiu...the starting point for The Old Spanish Trail in the 1800's. At that time, it was a trading post and military garrison with Ute's, Apaches ..and a combination with Spanish blood ..Genizaro.
Saint Tomas-AbiquiuBe sure to look in the corner of the Abiquiu Plaza for the Open Sign for a great local tour by Abiquiu Elder Napoleon Garcia, author of The Genizaro and the Artist (recommended reading)..a book about his decades of work with artist Georgia O'Keeffe ..a resident of the village for many..many years until her death.
Headed North again, with our goal being Durango, the scenery spectacular and sometimes sureal ..some places either on the road (84N) or close-by: Plaza Blanca, Abiquiu Lake, Ghost Ranch, Christ in the Desert Monastery, Echo Amphitheater, Continental Divide Trail, Chama and Pagosa Springs.
